Celine Dion's A New Day Has Come: A Comeback Album with a Mix of Styles

Celine Dion's A New Day Has Come: A Comeback Album with a Mix of Styles

Celine Dion, one of the most successful pop singers of all time, returned to the music scene in 2002 with her album A New Day Has Come, after a two-year hiatus during which she gave birth to her son RenÃ-Charles and cared for her husband Renà AngÃlil, who was recovering from cancer. The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number one in over 12 countries and selling over 12 million copies worldwide. It also marked a new chapter in Dion's life and career, as she explored new musical territories and expressed her joy of being a mother.

A New Day Has Come features 17 tracks that showcase Dion's versatility and vocal prowess. The album includes pop, rock, R&B, dance, blues and jazz influences, as well as adaptations of French and Spanish songs. The album's first single, A New Day Has Come, is a soaring ballad that celebrates the birth of her son and the dawn of a new era. The song was composed by Aldo Nova and Stephan Moccio and co-produced by Walter Afanasieff, who had worked with Dion on many of her previous hits. The song was released in two versions: a radio remix that opens the album and an original version that appears later on the album.

Other highlights of the album include I'm Alive, a catchy pop song produced by Anders Bagge and Peer Astrom, who had also worked with Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias; Have You Ever Been in Love, a romantic ballad written by Dianne Warren; Rain, Tax (It's Inevitable), an upbeat R&B track that samples the famous line "It's inevitable" from The Matrix; I Surrender, a powerful torch song written by Sam Watters and Louis Biancaniello; At Last, a cover of the classic blues song popularized by Etta James; and Nature Boy, a rendition of the jazz standard made famous by Nat King Cole.

The album also contains two adaptations of French songs: Ten Days, based on Tomber by GÃrald De Palmas; and The Greatest Reward, based on L'envie d'aimer by Pascal Obispo. Dion also sings in Spanish on AÃn Existe Amor, a version of her own song L'amour existe encore. The album closes with Goodbye's (The Saddest Word), a touching tribute to her mother, written and produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange.

A New Day Has Come is a well-balanced album that retains continuity with Dion's previous work while also introducing new sounds and styles. It is a testament to Dion's talent and resilience as an artist and a woman. A year later, many of the album's songs were incorporated into her Las Vegas show A New Day..., which ran for five years at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

A New Day Has Come received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised Dion's vocal performance and the diversity of the album. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars and wrote that "it's a balancing act that nobody since Barbra Streisand has been able to pull off". He also noted that "the songs just aren't that particularly memorable, even after several spins", but added that "the mood shifts effortlessly, it never seems to stay in one place, but it never catches hold, either". David Browne from Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+ and called it "a surprisingly varied and satisfying collection". He complimented Dion's "newfound restraint" and her choice of songs, but criticized some of the lyrics as "sappy" and "clichÃd". Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine gave the album three and a half out of five stars and wrote that "Dion has finally found a happy medium between her often over-the-top vocal style and the demands of adult contemporary radio". He also praised the album's production and the inclusion of some "unexpected gems" such as Nature Boy and At Last.

A New Day Has Come was also a huge commercial success, becoming Dion's fifth number-one album in the United States and her seventh number-one album in Canada. It also topped the charts in many other countries, such as Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The album sold over three million copies in its first week of release worldwide and was certified multi-platinum in many regions. It was also nominated for several awards, including two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for A New Day Has Come. The album's singles also performed well on various charts, with A New Day Has Come reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. I'm Alive peaked at number 17 on the Hot 100 and number six on the Adult Contemporary chart. Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) reached number 38 on the Hot 100 and number three on the Adult Contemporary chart.

A New Day Has Come is a milestone in Dion's career, as it marked her return to music after a long hiatus and a personal transformation. The album reflects Dion's maturity as an artist and a woman, as well as her joy of being a mother. It also showcases her versatility and range as a singer, as she tackles different genres and styles with ease and confidence. A New Day Has Come is a testament to Dion's talent and resilience as one of the most successful pop singers of all time. 29c81ba772
